R. Submarine Scire`
Gold Medal for Valor

Citation for the Gold Medal for Valor to the Flag of the R. Smg. Scirč

"As a submarine operating in the Mediterranean she returned safely from a number of successful ambushing operations; was then appointed to act with assault division of the Navy in the heart of enemy waters and frequently participated in forcing the most heavily fortified bases in the Mediterranean. During repeated attempts to achieve the purpose in view, she encountered the gravest difficulties, provoked by the violence of enemy retaliation and by sea and current difficulties. After overcoming, with the most utter disregards of danger, obstacles both artificial and natural, she succeeded in completing the task entrusted to her, surfacing at very short distance from the entrance to the very heavily fortified enemy bases selected and accordingly launching the special weapons, which caused the sinking of three large steamers at Gibraltar and, at Alexandria, serious damage to the two battleships Queen Elisabeth and Valiant, the total loss of these two vessels being prevented by the shallow depths at which both units were anchored. Subsequently, in course of a further particularly daring expedition, she was mercilessly attacked and disappeared in enemy waters, thus gloriously terminating her brilliant war-time carrier".
